Have you noticed that dentists always ask questions when it is impossible for you to answer. Recently, I had a tooth pulled out and my dentist told me to relax for a while before getting up. I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool. He knew I was a university lecturer and asked me whether the examinations were over. He then asked me how my wife was and if she was still a head teacher at Breckon Hill Primary. In answer to these questions, I either nodded or made strange noises. Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching for the hole where the tooth had been. I suddenly began to panic, but could not say anything. When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth.

Some fishermen are unlucky, instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am even less lucky. I never catch anything not even old boots. After having spent mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. 'You must give up fishing!' my wife says. 'It's a waste of time.' They don't realize one important thing. I am not really interested in fishing. I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all!

Every day, our dog, Felix, used to enjoy sitting outside our front gate. Every time he wanted to come into the garden, he would bark until someone opened the gate for him. When the neighbours complained of the noise, my husband spent countless hours training him to press his paw on the latch to let himself in. Felix soon became an expert at opening the gate. On the other hand, when I was going to work the other day, I noticed him in the garden near the gate. This time he would bark to be let out! Since then, he has acquired another bad habit. Once he opens the gate from the outside, he comes into the garden and waits until the gate shuts. Then he sits and barks until someone lets him out.
